昭和63年から平成元年となった1989年、「Billy Joel」は誕生年である1949年から1989年に至るまでの、世界の歴史に関する様々な事象を「We Didn’t Start The Fire」に並べてこの曲を作りました。
ある日Joelがレコーディング・スタジオで当時21歳のSean Lennon（John Lennonの息子）とその友達に会った時、彼等が朝鮮戦争やスエズ運河危機のことを知らなかった事がこの曲のきっかけだったとJoelは語っています。
「We Didn’t Start The Fire」は11枚目のアルバム「Storm Front」からの1stシングルとしてこの曲はリリースされました。
◆Storm Front
歌詞は一応表向きは「Billy Joel個人のあゆみを歴史的出来事で振り返る」…なんだけど、たまたま発表直後(1989年10月)から東欧革命が本格化したので、冷戦終結を賛美する歌と解釈されることもある楽曲です。
◆東欧革命
1989年にソ連の衛星国であった東ヨーロッパ諸国で共産主義体制が連続的に倒された革命。
邦題は「ハートにファイア」

Joel師匠の人生と米国に関わる事象・事件・音楽・人…
どれだけ分かったかな…
ま、日本の事は全く無いですが、そんなもんです。
本曲は3曲目の全米1位を獲得。また、米国の様々な学校で教材として使用されました。
その後1990年にはJoel本人による歌詞解説を追加収録したカセット・テープが、教育雑誌と共に学校に配布されています。
昨日4月1日に5月1日から改められる「令和」が公布・施行される事が菅官房長官から発表されました。
元号が変わる事で、我々日本人の生活が特に変わる訳ではないですが、何だか嬉しく希望が見える気がします。
この機に誰か「We Didn’t Start The Fire」みたいな曲作ればいいのにね。
